ALBUM REVIEW: Kelly Clarkson - My December

ALBUM REVIEW: Kelly Clarkson - My December

My December is the third studio from Kelly Clarkson and will be released (to the United States) June 26th along with the singles “Never Again” and “Sober”. I listened to the album recently, I really wanted to post a couple tracks, it sounds really good but the quality, not so good. For the most part it’s enough to get you through until the release date. A lot of rock inspirations, pop, and a little techno surprisingly, my favorite tracks are “Sober,” “Don’t Waste Your Time, ” “Judas,” “Haunted,” “Can I Have A Kiss” damn- I might as well just say the whole damn album! Man I can’t wait for this to drop cause the quality, again, is terrible but I can’t complain! The lyrics are so strong and make deep statements but so simplistic at the same time. You might as well call the album a “Confessions of a Broken Heart,” although that album and this album are completely different :slaps myself for saying that: but the concept and rawness of both are uncanny. I can also say, that along with Rihanna, Kelly is also rebelling a little bit. From when she first started out she was all bubble gum and innocent but now it is definitely a difference in style, sound, just overall “image” you could say. I’m actually feelin’ the female empowerment and rebellion going on.

WOW. I don’t know who was getting their panties in a tizzy (ahem..’Crappy’ Clive Davis) about the quality of Kelly’s 3rd album, to the point where he would undermine her by pushing back the release date (in essence, killing any chance of her tour from picking up momentum) and counter-marketing against her (in attempt to prevent front-loaded radio success). I have been listening to nothing besides my illegally downloaded copy of My December for the past 3 days…and I am DEFINITELY buying the album the day it comes out. Frankly, Kelly shows her competence as a writer (no, she’s not going to write lyrical poetry..but each song effectively portrays a mood to full effect, so that the album becomes a mosaic of varied feelings) and her vocals are, as always, impeccable. Like Breakaway, December has its mix of rhythmic ballads and power rock, the major difference that December’s tracks aren’t as processed with all the vocal layering that (although well-done, and obviously radio-friendly) Breakaway had. Even still, I can still see most of these tracks doing well on contemporary radio, even rock formats. The songs are instantly catchy (I was able to sing along by mid-song on most of them). The one drawback I had at first was the repetitiveness of the lyrics (the chorus seems to play 3, 4, and 5 times in some songs), but after several listens, I’m not bothered at all by it. In fact, it just goes to prove what I said earlier about each song being an effective snipped of a particular emotion. For example, Sober’s lyrics essentially circle around the central theme of being shortly removed from a particular addiction, portraying happines, trepidation, and vulnerability all within lines of each other.
In the end, Sober and Be Still are musically beautiful, rolling ballads perfectly filled out by Kelly’s emotion-packed and charismatic vocals.
Don’t Waste Your Time is my favorite track at the moment, a readily sing-along melody of lament over a relationship gone bad, but at the same time finding it hard to let go.
Never Again is the ‘rock’iest of the bunch, the back and forth sing-scream lines that put the lyrics at the front and the crashing synth guitars in the background for a single that is unique from anything on radio on the moment (and, unfortunately, that singularity isn’t rewarded on today’s fickle hot 100 radio that at the moment is largely dominated by meaningless, zero-quality crap).
Haunted, Maybe, and Can I Have A Kiss, are classic crescendoing songs, starting slow with a verse with minimal musical backing, gradually progressing into rolling rocky goodness. Singing along has never been so fun.
Judas and Hole jump straight into the beat - the lyrics really stand out. The first song, cleverly titled, describes anguish after discovering the deceit of a friend/boyfriend. The second perhaps describes the aftermath of that.
I could write more, but in the end, the conclusion is - BUY THE ALBUM!! It’s great. KC fans will not be disappointed, and I daresay anyone who wasn’t a fan before will find much to like with this latest cut by the independent, courageous Kelly Clarkson!

I have been listening to the album constantly for the last two days; and i completely agree with the you! Its deep, and it shows actual emotion! Kelly was doing this from day one, even with ‘Since You Been Gone’-though she did not co-write the album ‘Breakaway,’ the way Kelly sings those songs still shows this girl has DEPTH! My December is not amazing! It will not sell 6million records, but she is growing as an artist and individual and thats what all artist should be doing! If the critics do not like it, tough, because these are the critics that made singers like Britney and even Paris’s one hit SUCCESS! Kelly will be and will always be a major component to the music industry, and you will definetly see more cookie-cutter songs on her fourth album, because right now thats considered success. But Kelly has shown that she can write, sing, and yet again has DEPTH! I wish her the best of luck, and hope that ‘My December’ will be another MAJOR HIT! Cause it has songs that i agree do not only show depth but ‘top ten’ hits! Such as ‘Sober’ ‘One Minute’ ‘Judas’ ‘Yeah’ ‘Can I have a Kiss’ and ‘Irvine!’ What can i say, it may not be a favorite with the critics but what can i say YOU’VE DONE IT AGAIN!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!
This album is just awesome!!!! I love this sound for Kelly, it is a sound unlike any other and it really works for her and suits her vocal range and type. “Sober” is the “Addicted” from ‘Breakaway’ on ‘My December’, it’s just impeccably done and exceptionally written. “Irvine” is another lovely ballad that has a wonderful tone and the lyrics are so powerful. This album works for Kelly, unlike other albums that have ballads that don’t work or too many, the numerous ballads work on this effort by Clarkson. She does keep the rock edge alive coming off of ‘Breakaway’ with lead single “Never Again”, “One Minute” (can be third single :], “Hole”, “Judas” and others. This is a sound that works for Kelly and it is wonderful, any song can be a single and will do well.

i think this album must be called a ” piece of art” it’s stronge, deep and i think it’s the most wonderful album i’ve ever seen, those who think this is just not as good as “breakaway” i don’t think they’re a true listeners or true art understanders, i mean this album is the most powerfull one i’ve ever listened to,that deep voice, that wonderfull, amazing extra feeling in it, it’s just a parade to another world, deep, strong, emotional, and it’s a real mosaic of sensations and faith, kelly is a great artist, and artists like her are rare, she’s the strongest and most amazing artist.

My December is a deep album. one of my fav. songs is “haunted” it is power full and her voice is amazing. the deepest song on this album, i have to say is, “Irvine”. in this song , she was really depressed, and questioning God. the album recording is from inside kellys closet. “How I Feel”, i think, is the Since “You’ve Been Gone” on this album. it is something u would rock out in ur car in. “Chivas” is the hidden track, it rocks and its so hilarious! i would rate this album 9.5 out of 10.

My Favorites:

- Hole
- Dont Waste Your Time
- Judas
- Haunted
- Be Still
- How I Feel
- Yeah
- Irvine
- (hidden track) Chivas

Go out and buy This CD!!!! My December Is AWESOME!
