NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA // FRIDAY, JULY 4TH 2008 » So many celebs came out to support, perform and attend the 2008 Essence Music Festival this year on Independence Day. Rihanna, Chris Brown, Kanye West and J. Holiday all performed friday night at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and Louisiana Superdome. Solange, Bow Wow, Chris Paul, LeBron James, and more were all at the festival for the first day on the 4th. Check out more pics after the cut.

This past Sunday (June 22nd), I had the opportunity to attend the “Art of Love” tour featuring Chrisette Michele and Raheem DeVaughn live from inside Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason center. The show started around 8PM and opened with Solange, she did about 3 or 4 songs from her forthcoming album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. Her performance was very Supreme era with a lot of attitude, “I feel good, I look good, but I broke my Goddamn toe!” exclaimed the soulful singer. If I had not already known about Solange breaking her toe (prior to that remark) I probably would have been shocked; she held her composer extremely well. I cannot remember but two songs I think I liked; they were “I Decided,” which was a song written by Pharrell Williams and Solange herself, and “T.O.N.Y.” an acronymic song Solange said meant “The Other Night Y”. Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to meet Solange or interview her, but overall my experience with the show was fun! Also, Chrisette did an amazing job and was simply beautiful. Meanwhile, Raheem, by the way congrats on the BET J Award, commanded the stage! He had a painter in the background, Raheem was on the floor singing and crawling, running around the building — it was a performance. Raheem will really give your money’s worth. People recently caught up with Beyonce’s little sister Solange, and asked her about her sister’s wedding and what she thinks about Beyonce when it comes to taking care of Juelz, Solange’s son. According to Solange, big sister had to call on little sister a few times. Hey, we all have to learn from someone! Right?

And Music World Music does it again! I swear, that management team has some crazy ideas when it comes to marketing their talent. Most people do radio promos, interviews, and commercials, among other things. But no, not Mathew Knowles and the rest of his crew. They decided to leak a song Beyonce’s been working on because they knew that shit will spread like the bird flu in the Middle East. Had they leaked a song from Kelly, Michelle, or Solange … it probably wouldn’t have even seen the light of day. Sad … but true.
FROM Beyonceonline.com: Yesterday, “Beautiful Nightmare,” a demo I’ve been working on for possible inclusion on my next album, leaked on some websites. I want to thank all my fans for the positive response to the song, but I want to tell you that this is just a work in progress. It is not my time to put out new music. If you really want to hear some really great music now, you have to support my girls Kelly, Michelle and my sister Solange. Kelly just re-released her album digitally in the US, so check out “Ms. Kelly: Diva Deluxe.” Michelle is about to put out the first single, “We Break The Dawn,” from her album and Solange’s single, “I Decided,” is already one of my favorites.

It looks like I Decided will be the first single from Solange’s forthcoming album Soul Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams (Geffen/MWM). It’s a nice, smooth uptempo sultry track and I’m really diggin’ it! I can’t wait for new material from Solange now!! Btw, anyone know who produced??

According to a recent MySpace blog posted by Solange Knowles, she’s having a great time raising her toddler.
“I have been so blessed that my son is the coolest kid ever. He fusses if he doesn’t have a cup of Starbucks coffee with his morning paper. Of course, that first year of not sleeping and just being dedicated to him had tough parts but that’s fine. It’s been a blast for me. A lot of people have doubts, but when you have a child I think it takes a really non-emotional person not to have a blast, no matter what age. I’ve heard stories of people who were 14 that had kids and basically snapped into it and got into the groove of motherhood. I think that emotional attachment, there’s nothing out of it that you could regret.”
Hmm, I wonder how different that blog post would be if she didn’t have the assistance of her rich parents and her famous/rich sister? Teen mothers who don’t have help from rich family members typically don’t “have a blast” in the first few years, and possibly the rest of their life. Take away the ex-Carolina Panthers football playing dad, the mega celebrity auntie, the super-rich grandparents, and the mom who has a little cash on the side too, and what do you get? Exactly…
This past Friday, it was reported that Jay-Z wouldn’t be able to celebrate the opening of his new 40/40 club in Las Vegas this weekend because of the club not passing some kind of inspection test. But obviously, everything was cleared up and the party went on as planned. But eff the party! Check out the dude behind Jay-Z. If that ain’t a piercing side-eye, I don’t know what is. Maybe someone should teach Al Sharpton the PROPER way to throw your diamonds in the sky.
I came across some more photos of Jay-Z’s big “New Year’s Eve” concert (even though it was this past Saturday) at The Pearl in Las Vegas. Kanye West, Mary J Blige, Ne-Yo, Memphis Bleek, and Beanie Sigel all showed up and performed with Jay live on stage. Sounds like it was a pretty good show! More flicks after the break…
Not even Sean Garret can salvage her music career! With that being said, I can’t wait for Her Name is Nicole (Interscope), believe it or not. I think everything has to do with timing, her people debuted her too early, people didn’t care about Nicole as a solo artist then (I don’t know why she left the PCD). But best believe she will have her time to shine soon, way too much was going on this year. That’s why I’m glad the label pushed her album back until next year, they ain’t playing that, very smart. Again, like I said, it’s the timing - with the right promotion, singles, and pull - 2008 could very well be her year.
